Brian Funkhouser, President and CEO

Significant changes have occurred in engineering and architecture since I joined Buchart Horn more than 30 years ago.

Advances in electronics have reshaped how we produce, review, and deliver design services.

Buchart Horn decided to invest some time and explore the effect these changes have had on our business by embarking on a Strategic Planning process.

In the day-to-day rush of business demands there is little time for introspection. Setting aside a few days to reflect on where we’ve been, where we are, and where we want to go was, for me, energizing and exhilarating.

We began the process with a confidential survey of all employees and continued with off-site meetings with a meaningful cross-section of the firm.

If you had been with me at those meetings or reviewed those surveys you would have seen and heard key words surface again and again:

  • Honesty
  • Integrity
  • Professional Excellence
  • Loyalty
  • Teamwork
  • Accountability
  • Respect for Work/Life Balance

These core values surfaced whether we were discussing markets, disciplines, or corporate organization.

Clearly, these values reflect our character and guide our behavior toward each other, our profession, and our interaction with our clients. Having these core values naturally emerge so strongly from the employee survey and working sessions made me proud of our firm.

These values are shared by our founder, Russell Horn, Sr., who recently celebrated his 97th birthday. Strong positive values energized our firm in its early years, and they continue to energize us today.
Thankfully, some things never change.

My pledge to our clients and to our employees is to do everything I can to reinforce these values in every professional relationship we have.

Sincerely,

Brian Funkhouser, PE
President/CEO

PWEA BioMag(TM) Pilot Study Presentation

Buchart Horn’s Mike Schober, PE & Jeff Culton, PE presented the Pilot Test results of a BioMagTM Enhanced Nutrient Removal (ENR) Process at PWEA’s (Pennsylvania Water Environment Association’s) 8th Annual Technical Conference & Exhibition. The ENR activated sludge Pilot process is successfully operating at the Winebrenner WWTP in Cascade, MD. A link to their presentation is at the end of this article.

BioMagTM enhances biological wastewater treatment processes by using magnetite to ballast biological floc. With a specific gravity of 5.2 and a strong affinity for biological solids, magnetite substantially increases the settling rate of the biomass. Increasing settling rates of the biological floc provides the opportunity to increase mixed liquor (MLSS) concentration. A higher MLSS concentration enables the treatment of increased hydraulic flows or surges and loadings, all within the same tankage. BioMagTM is a perfect application for activated sludge plants of all types needing more treatment capacity and enhanced nutrient removal capability, at a cost far less than MBR technology

BioMagTM technology has achieved effluent suspended solids, BOD, nitrogen, and phosphorus concentrations in a compact footprint. BioMag substantially reduces biological treatment reactor volume requirements and dramatically decreases the footprint needed for BOD and nitrogen removal.
