Biological Nutrient Removal Baltimore City Back River Wastewater Treatment Plant

The largest BNR project in the Chesapeake Bay region is under construction at the Baltimore City Back River Wastewater Treatment Plant. Designed by Buchart-Horn, it represents the first use of the MLE process in Maryland. When completed it will treat 173 mgd (653.9 x 108 L/d). This project was recognized for Engineering Excellence with an Honor Award from the American Consulting Engineers Council.

SERVICES

In the 1987 Chesapeake Bay Agreement, the Chesapeake Bay Program partners set a goal to reduce levels of nitrogen and phosphorous entering the Bay by 40% by the year 2000.

This reduction is necessary in order to hinder destructive algal growth and its harmful affect on the Bay's natural environment. The algal growth causes low oxygen levels, limits water clarity, and reduces available habitat for the Bay's living resources.

One way to minimize the harmful quantities of these nutrients is to engineer wastewater treatment systems which reduce the effluent levels. Buchart-Horn, Inc. has over a decade of experience engineering such wastewater treatment systems. In doing so, we have helped municipalities throughout the Chesapeake Bay watershed achieve their nutrient removal goals.

As a result, we are recognized as a leading engineering firm in biological nutrient removal (BNR). Buchart-Horn's expert staff provides a comprehensive range of services, including:

  • Studies
  • Design
  • Financial Analysis
  • Start-up Services
  • Construction Administration
  • Regulatory Agency Coordination
  • Operator Training
  • Operation & Maintenance Manuals
  • Our services are provided by experienced engineers and technicians who specialize in wastewater treatment. All of Buchart-Horn's projects are managed by senior engineers. Project managers strive to work as an extension of the client's staff.

The needs of each client, and their respective projects, are unique. Therefore, every aspect of a project is fully evaluated, including an influent waste characterization analysis, before a process recommendation is made. It is our philosophy to apply, rather than copy, our past success.

Buchart-Horn's staff is able to combine past experience with new technology by maintaining relationships with academic institutions that perform, and are on the cutting-edge of, BNR research. Some examples of our staff's efforts to be active in the development of BNR technology are: participating in professional development seminars, serving on the Water Environment Federation's (WEF) Nutrient Control Task Force as an author of the WEF Nutrient Removal Manual of Practice, and teaching courses on BNR.

    EXPERIENCE

Our extensive BNR reference library, which contains volumes of technical papers, adds to our firm's resources. Hundreds of current databases are also utilized extensively by Buchart-Horn's staff through on-line computer services.
